The "Traumatized" and "Unmotivated"

If you've heard you're clients being labeled as these, it's imperative that you do not overlook or brush aside these loaded labels. â€‹â€‹

Misinformation and misunderstandings can happen, even with the best intentions. "Traumatized" is often used as shorthand for too difficult to handle, while "unmotivated" implies a child is unwilling.

In reality, these are judgments that overlook context and limit human potential, reducing complex experiences to labels instead of recognizing the underlying needs and challenges and clinicians we need to stop these judgements in their tracks! â€‹â€‹

Bridging the Gap Between Science and Practice

Six years ago, when I was in an advanced program, Trauma and ADHD were barely discussed—despite their profound impact on behavior, learning, and emotional regulation. Yet, as the world becomes more challenging, these factors are at the forefront of behavior change and must be considered in any meaningful intervention.

While your training may have provided a strong foundation in the science of applied behavior analysis (ABA), it may not have fully explored the complexities of trauma and neurodiversity in behavioral support.

If your training focused primarily on reinforcement schedules, functional behavior assessments, and behavior plans—but not on how adversity, stress, and executive functioning challenges shape behavior—you’re not alone. The field is evolving, and it’s time to bridge the gap between behavior science and a deeper understanding of the children we serve.
