A recent experience around an FBA left me with dread. I continue to come to a realization that children in need of behavioral support in school settings are often met with haphazard, lukewarm efforts can leave lasting scars—on their learning, emotional well-being, and relationships.

The Problem with Half Measures

Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) are powerful tools—but only when approached with care, intention, and expertise. They are not checklists to be completed or forms to submit.

  • Done thoughtfully, they become individualized roadmaps that guide meaningful, compassionate interventions tailored to a student’s unique needs.

  • Done poorly, they create confusion, reinforce problem behaviors, and escalate emotional distress, causing significant harm to a child’s trust, self-esteem, and relationships.

The consequences of untrained or rushed behavior change efforts cannot be understated.

Every child deserves more than guesswork.

What Makes an FBA Effective?

A quality FBA is more than data collection—it’s about planning for success from the start.

Thoughtful behavior professionals will ask critical questions before moving forward, such as:

  1. Who will be responsible for ensuring the BIP is carried out consistently?

  2. Is the team committed to receiving proper training to implement the plan effectively?

  3. How often will regular check-ins occur to monitor success and make adjustments as needed?

Why It Matters

A well-executed FBA and BIP can transform challenges into opportunities for growth. This work doesn’t just “fix behaviors”—it helps children build skills, strengthen relationships, and develop confidence in their ability to navigate the world.

When we invest the time, care, and expertise into FBAs, we:

  • Support a child’s learning and emotional well-being.

  • Build trust and meaningful relationships.

  • Leave a positive, lasting impact.

We take FBAs and BIPs seriously, we’re not just solving problems—we’re changing lives.

🚩 Be wary of any FBA writers passing through the night!
